The new year (and decade) is creeping up on us. But, before we ditch our leggings and oversized sweaters for our Gatsby inspired flapper dresses, let’s talk about resolutions.
This is the time of year where many people I know start making lists of what they want to accomplish in the new year. For the longest time, I was one of them. My list always looked something like this:
- Book an animated series
- Book a national commercial
- Audition every day (if possible)
- Get good representation
- Make a new demo
…You get the gist.
Having a list like this to look back on always made me feel disappointed whenever a goal wasn’t met (and in our industry – it’s nearly impossible to guarantee they will be). Nowadays, I find myself more and more appreciative of the journey. How far have I come? What do I have now that I wished I had for so long? Would a younger version of myself be proud of what I’ve done and where I’m at?
It’s so easy to get caught up in what we want to do that we sometimes neglect the awesome things we have done. This year, let’s challenge each other to treat our resolutions like our Instagram profiles – as big old highlight reels. What did you do this year that you’re proud of? We’ll call it the #ReverseResolutionChallenge.
Here is my new list:
- Celebrated my one year anniversary with my (dream) representation
- Booked multiple national commercials
- Had some really fun auditions
- Finished building my professional recording studio
- Attended my first voice over conference and met amazing people
…The wins are way more fun to list :).
In no way am I saying “don’t set goals for yourself” – you absolutely should and I still will. But, I think focusing our energy on our wins (no matter how big or small) will help us enter the new year with a more positive mindset. At the end of the year, you may come to find that you accomplished some goals that weren’t even on your list! In an industry that constantly tells us “no”, we need a little self-lovin’.
What are you proud of? Let me know in the comments below.
Happy new year! Wishing you a 2020 filled with beautiful memories and tons of success!
